    Table of contents

What are the features of an everyday gravel bike?

Everyday gravel bikes stand for versatility and suitability for everyday use. With comfortable geometries and practical equipment, they bridge the gap to urban and hybrid bikes, but remain true to their gravel genes and their basic sports focus. Maximum speed and challenging terrain, on the other hand, are left to the Race and Adventure segment.

These bikes range from modified adventure bikes with full equipment to ones that set accents with robust frame materials and a more upright cycling posture. What they all have in common is the desire to enable rapid progress even in urban areas and to adapt flexibly to everyday conditions.

All everyday gravel bikes therefore offer the option of fitting mudguards and stands if these are not already installed. Lightweight gravel tyres with moderate treads and tyre widths are also typical. On the other hand, the devices for carrying luggage vary – depending on how sporty, stylish or practical you prefer it.

Which bike model is the right one for you?

As versatile as the everyday gravel bikes are – each model has its own specialties. Which bike suits you best therefore also depends on your personal preferences. Which statement is most true for you?

    • I'm looking for a beginner-friendly gravel bike for sport and everyday life.

With the Blend Gravel, you can set off in a sporty manner without compromising on comfort. The balanced riding position of the affordable gravel bike is also suitable for relaxed trips into the city.

Take a look at the Blend.

    • I'm looking for a robust city bike that also works well off-road.

Cruising with style: With its robust steel frame, a relaxed riding position and innovative solutions for carrying luggage, the Hobo is ideal for the city, but also feels at home off-road.

Take a look at the Hobo.

    • I am looking for a reliable all-rounder with everyday and commuter qualities.

On the fully equipped Backroad AL EQ, you sit slightly more upright than on the carbon model – with the robust aluminium frame it’s an ideal combination for daily commuting and relaxed tours.

Take a look at the Backroad AL EQ.

    • I am looking for a sporty gravel bike with full equipment and low weight.

The everyday bike for maximum riding fun: Fully equipped, with sporty geometry and a lightweight carbon frame, the Backroad EQ also provides plenty of comfort off-road and on long tours.

Take a look at the Backroad EQ .

Are everyday gravel bikes suitable for bikepacking?

With their balanced geometries, wide tyres and comfort features, everyday gravel bikes are ideal touring companions. However, as the length of the tours increases, so does the luggage. That’s why many luggage storage options are required for multi-day tours.

You can equip the Blend with bikepacking bags and retrofit a pannier rack if required. With 14 mounting points and luggage rack, the Backroad EQ models can even be considered true randonneur bikes – fast touring bikes with drop bar that can take on everything from brevet and spontaneous bikepacking trips to bike tours with light luggage. What is the weight limit for the payload?

While touring and hybrid bikes are designed for high payloads and are correspondingly heavy and stable, gravel bikes focus on sporting aspects and therefore on optimising the weight of the frame. That’s why the weight limit for our everyday gravel bikes is 110 kg.

This value, also known as the system weight, refers to the weight of the rider, the luggage, any bicycle trailer plus additional load, as well as the weight of the bicycle itself. Or to put it more simply: Imagine riding onto a scale with your bike fully loaded. The value determined in this way must not exceed the system weight of the respective bike.

    Sample calculation:
    10 kg (bike) + 75 kg (rider) + 5 kg (luggage) + 15 kg (child trailer) + 5 kg (child) = 110 kg
The bike must therefore have a system weight of at least 110 kg.

Which accessories are useful for everyday gravel bikes?

With an everyday gravel bike, you decide what to focus on: Do you use it as a fast, versatile city bike? For training, touring or bikepacking adventures? Your choice of accessories should also be appropriate.

Starting with the pedals, where you choice between flat, clipless and duo pedals. You can delve deeper into the subject with our gravel pedal guide. The second must-have is a bike helmet. Most gravel bikers choose road helmets. Add a pair of cycling glasses to protect your eyes – and you're all set for now.

However, you should buy things like a puncture repair kit or a bike lock in the long term. You won't be able to avoid chain oil if you care about your drive. Take a look at other useful accessories for solid initial equipment:

    • Basics: Pedals, bike lock, pump

    • Clothing: Helmet, glasses, cycling trousers, jersey, cycling shoes

    • Parts: Bottle cage and water bottle, saddle or frame bag, bike computer or smartphone holder

    • Breakdown aids: Repair kit, spare tube, tyre lever, mini pump, multi-tool

    • Care: Chain oil, bike cleaner, chain cleaner

    • Tools: Torque wrench, workstand, tool box

    FAQ

Are there suitable mudguards for the Blend and Hobo?
Yes, you can find precisely fitting Blend mudguards from SKS Germany here. The Hobo mudguards from SKS, which can also be permanently mounted, are available here.
How do I choose the right frame size for a gravel bike?
First, please measure your inside leg length. Use a spirit level and a meter stick to help you. Lean against a wall without shoes, hold the spirit level straight and pull it high up into your crotch. Measure the result from the floor to the top edge of the spirit level. The recommendations for your bike model are indicated in the size selection in the ordering process. The size recommendations for the Blend are based on body height.
How much luggage can I carry on the Backroad luggage rack?
The maximum load for the Backroad luggage carrier is 8 kg per side, i.e. 16 kg in total.
What is the difference between a randonneur, hybrid bike and touring bike?
A randonneur is a lightweight, sporty long-distance bike for fast tours with little luggage, while a hybrid bike is designed for more luggage and offers a more upright riding position. Another characteristic feature of the randonneur is the drop bar. The touring bike, on the other hand, is designed for long and demanding tours, is particularly robust and can carry heavy loads.
Aluminium or carbon? Which bike is better for you?
How can I best care for my gravel bike?
It is important to clean and oil the chain – depending on use, but at the latest after riding in the rain. You should also wash your bike regularly and then lubricate moving parts such as the rear derailleur.
Can I order two sizes to choose from in the store?
If you are unsure about the size, it is best to book a consultation appointment with a test ride. We will then order the desired size for later collection from the store.
Can I test ride a bike without an appointment?
Yes, that’s generally possible. In this case, however, you should expect some waiting time and preferably visit us during the week, with sufficient time until closing time.
What do I do if the bike I want is not available for a test ride?
Here you will find lists of the test and exhibition bikes in the respective stores. If your desired bike is not available in the exact configuration, you can often test your frame size in a different colour or equipment variant.
